I'm not big into celebrating my birthday. I hate the spotlight, and I generally stay home on my birthday, avoiding everyone. My preference is to cook a nice meal and stay in. What does Emil do this year? He takes a risk and throws me a surprise party. Side note: I don't like surprises either.

It was a lovely evening, and I enjoyed myself! Our friend, Steve, has an outdoor pizza oven. We've gone to his house in the past for pizza parties, and it's so much fun. So, Emil coordinated the party over at Steve's house. Throw in beer, kombucha, dear friends, and delicious pizza.

Oh! The day before my birthday, Emil and I went to Portland and spent the day. What a wonderful time! We had the best breakfast at Tin Shed.

Here are a few pics from the party and Portland trip:
Can you tell I've been non-stop busy since December? Sigh.

Life has been hectic since then. I could tell you what's been going on, but you wouldn't believe it. More importantly, I've survived. Everyone survived. And, I'm looking forward to a little time off this summer. There are so many things I want to do. Can you believe we've never been to Crater Lake? Yet, my parents have been there twice. I accused my dad of just taking a picture of a postcard and sending it to me. It can't really be that beautiful, can it? Guess we'll find out this summer. There are festivals to attend, parades to watch, hikes, floating the river, and more.

I'll finish working at Mt. Bachelor at the end of May. A brief break, then I start up again there in September. Catering has started, and I just finished my second gig. Yep, carpel tunnel and tendonitis are still present. Sigh. I would give it up, but I love cooking and food way too much. Annie's pork chili verde knocked me off the vegetarian wagon. It's THAT GOOD.

Let's see ... what else? Lent is over. I dived into a box of donuts and a bag of chips all at breakfast on Easter. Do you doubt me? See pic below for proof. Peeps on top of donuts. So CUTE!!

Emil is absolutely buried in woodworking and website projects. If I'm lucky, I see him creep to the kitchen for a bowl of salted caramel gelato for sustenance.

Guess Yam and I better start packing for a trip to Crater Lake. Hope he can keep up with me! Gotta get off that winter weight! He's excited to go. See pic below for proof.
Last Wednesday, I hosted a book signing for my second novel, After We Met. It was fun, full of my friends, and relaxing. No stress this time around, thanks to Bluebird Coffee Company. They suggested an interactive event with a short Q & A session and a couple of short readings.
For Emil's birthday in September, I bought him tickets to see The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. The closest location to see them was Arcata, CA, so I've been saving money ever since to fund our quick trip there. The concert was this past Wednesday evening at Humboldt State University. What a fantastic concert and two day vacation (18 hours in the car).
Here's a youtube video of them:
I've been slammed with fun, work, and time with friends. How about y'all? 'Tis the season, so I was ready.

My Christmas shopping was done fairly early in November. I only had to pick up a few gifts in December. Every year, I have one gift I'm super excited to give someone in my family. This year, I bought my brother, Ted, the perfect t-shirt. It was a tree, shaped like a guitar head. It also said Bend, Oregon on it. He loved visiting Bend this summer, so I knew he would like the shirt.

Our tradition is spending Christmas Eve with neighbors and catching up with them, laughing, and eating delicious food. The food theme this year was Mexican, and the neighbors asked me to bring flan. I've never made flan before. Both turned out fairly well ... traditional creme caramel and coconut.

We worked on Christmas, but enjoyed a special meal once we got home and cleaned up. Fried rice and potstickers. One of our favorite meals. Way better than take-out! Plus, we were blessed with many wonderful gifts from my family and our friends.

Here's a pic of Yam with a few of our gifts:

Now it's time to think about resolutions and goals. I generally don't make resolutions, but my friend, Tom, keeps nudging me to do it. My first goal is to learn picking on the ukulele. A few uke friends and I are working on this song right now.

I'll work on some other goals and keep you posted. Happy New Year!!

Hooray! After We Met is the sequel to Adventures in Dating, and it's available for sale. The publishing process was a little easier this time around, and I'm thankful for my friends and family for their support. I had different beta readers this time, and they gave great feedback, especially my mother. She didn't hold back. I did change a few items she mentioned. We also laughed a lot regarding my inexperience with babies and delivery.

I teased Emil and said if I write a third book, the main character is getting a divorce and moving back to Charleston. I'm not into always writing a happy ending. My books are nothing like my real life, right?
Caught your eye right?

Here's my big news:

1. My aunt and uncle are coming to house-sit for two months this winter. I can't wait to show (drag) them around Bend. Tubing at Mt.Bachelor, snow-shoeing, hiking, downtown, good restaurants, and more. It's been awhile since I've seen them, so it will be good to catch up. Plus, they play euchre!

2. My sequel is in the home stretch. I hope to publish soon. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks for your support!

My heartfelt thanks to my mother for her support on everything I do. In particular, her edits to the sequel book I'm working on right now. Like the first book, she is brutal with edits and completely honest. It's what I need from someone reading my book. She told me yesterday, "I can be honest with you because I'm not afraid of you." Ha!

I've laughed so much with her these past few weeks. She gives the best critique. Most of the time, I listen to her edits and comments. There are only a few of them I disregard. But, I tell her, so she won't be surprised with the final cut of the book.

My character is really into food and lattes. Just like me in real life. I dream about lattes and wake up thinking about a latte. In fact, I think this dreary weather calls for a latte run. I do deserve it because I'm going to work on my book this morning. All the food and lattes in the book drives Mother crazy!

The sequel will hopefully be published by the holidays. I received three great cover concepts from the graphic designer. Everything is rolling along.

Here's a throwback Thursday pic of Mother and I in Denali National Park.
I love pumpkin season! Especially baking with pumpkin. I've paced myself so far and only made one pumpkin recipe. There's plenty of time left to bake this season.
A group of friends and I went to my favorite pumpkin patch on Friday. Blue skies, hundreds of pumpkins, and the search for the favorite pumpkin was on!
Wahooey! The draft sequel to Adventures in Dating is written. Soon, it will be in the hands of my trusted beta readers. They promise to be brutal and give any and all criticism.

My mother is the best beta reader ever. Chick Lit is not her preferred genre, but she's my biggest supporter. Not only does she give back excellent feedback, but she's always there to bounce ideas back and forth. For example, I sent her the sequel cover concepts. She had a totally different perspective on them and made me feel better. She also told me what I want in a cover even though I wasn't even sure what I wanted!

My goal is to publish the sequel by the holidays. Everything is rolling along so far, and I'm enjoying the process this time around so much more. Thanks to everyone for their support! Stay posted for book release info!

It seems like once I turned forty, my health started slowly declining. Or rather, it takes longer to heal. When I fell skiing in February, I tore my meniscus and sprained my ACL. I'm still recovering from it. Probably because once the PT signed off on my recovery, I started running again and overdid it. But still...

Now, I have an inflamed arm and hand, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel. Wham! All at once, and it's not fun at all. Here are the two really pain-in-the-butt inconveniences:

1. No ukulele. For months, I've practiced a song for open mic, which occurs next month. I could probably play the song, but then spend the rest of the evening massaging my hurting hand and arm. Is it worth the pain? Maybe.

2. Interrupted sleep. The pain in my arm and hand wakes me up every night. Then, I spend an hour trying to fall asleep again. Argghh. I love sleeping. It's one of my favorite hobbies.

I'm also editing the sequel to my book. Typing doesn't help my hand heal. So, I guess I'll have to find something else to do while I heal.

Any suggestions? Harass Yam the cat? Watch TV?

Song Camp is my favorite catering gig of the year. This year was even better because my friend, Lori, came down from Alaska to work with me. She brought her awesome enthusiasm and inspired me to stay up late and go big.

What do I mean? Well, it's hard work. Every night after dinner, I just want to take off my shoes and lay in bed. I'm always on breakfast duty, so I need my rest. But, each night after dinner, it's open mic. So, Lori and I cheered everyone on at open mic until late. You can never tell what someone will sound like until they get up and sing. I love being blown away by their performances.

If you haven't heard of Song Camp, let me tell you about it. Musicians come and mentor camp attendees for a week in songwriting, stage presence, technology, and more. It's ah-mazing. We feed them good food all week. The saying is "the music is great at food camp." This year, there were 150 folks, gorgeous weather, and sleep deficit all around.

https://www.sistersfolkfestival.org/americana-song-academy/

We receive a free pass to the Sisters Folk Festival. In the past, I generally make it there one day, but I'm too tired to go all three days. This year, I went two days. All day. In fact, we didn't get home until 1 a.m. both nights. See what I mean about going big?

I encourage you to check out the festival line up. There are a few pics below, but I didn't see everyone. https://www.sistersfolkfestival.org/
For months, Emil and a few friends have attended trivia at The Lot on Tuesday evenings. I've skipped out of trivia due to ukulele jam, but I've joined them the last few times. They were consistently third place, then second, and finally last week, they won first place. Now, first place has a few perks. You get to hold a super cool trophy for five minutes, and you have a reserved table the following week.
Tom and I have been hanging out the last few weeks now that he's around more. Our plan is to do one item a week new to each of us. It can be a new restaurant, new tourist attraction, anything. Two weeks ago, we tried out the Indian restaurant. Meh. It was okay, but nothing to write much about.

Last week, we went to Fall River. It's a few miles past Sunriver and an absolutely gorgeous clear river. Emil would never fish this river. If you can see the fish, then the fish can see you.

We did see a fly fisher, and he was having great luck. I filmed his graceful casting. Sorry I can't share it with you here.
Well, I better return to writing. I'm about 27,000 words into the sequel. My goal is to publish by Christmas.

My parents, uncle, and his girlfriend came to visit right after my brother and his wife. What fun! I said the visit went well once I realized I can't boss my parents around. I think I figured that out about day two of their vacation. Mother, Dad, and Uncle Ron were here last year, so they checked out a few new places here. But, they really enjoyed their time house-sitting in a gorgeous house in Sunrise Village. It was hard to get them to leave the backporch overlooking the Deschutes River.

What impressed me the most was my mother. She's not much of a dog person, but she really liked the dogs they were taking care of. She even bought them homemade doggie treats from the Northwest Crossing Farmer's Market! Ah-mazing!
I'm skipping June activities because I can't remember what I did. I do remember the weather was warm, and I was tempted to plant my garden early. Okay fine. I got up and looked at my calendar. Looks like I catered a few events, went fishing at Paulina Lake, attended my first book club as the guest author, started exercising again because my knee was feeling better, and went to see the Indigo Girls for free here in Bend. Is that enough excitement or what?!

My brother, Ted, and his wife, Karla, came to visit the third week of July. It was their first trip to Oregon! We went all out! Lunch at a hip restaurant in Portland after we picked them up from the airport all the way to paddle-boarding. Ted was impressed and kept saying he wanted to move here. I told him repeatedly, "our life isn't really this exciting. We're dragging you all over town to do stuff. Sometimes, we just watch TV at night. Actually, that's how we spend several nights a week." He didn't believe me.
Wow! What a visit! It was so much fun to spend time with them and show them beautiful, Bend. They flew out the same day my parents, uncle, and his girlfriend arrived. Time for the next round of guests.

The summer has flown by! Fastest summer ever, I swear. The last thing I remember was finishing up work at Mt. Bachelor at the end of May. I have no idea what I did in June. Now, it's almost Labor Day.

I'll post a few pics from the highlights of the last few months. They are totally random and probably out of order, so please bear with me.

Josh aka Jack, in my book came to Bend for a wedding in May. I agonized on where to take him for lunch. He likes beer and good food, plus a hip atmosphere. Finally, I decided on Crux. A little chilly to sit outside, but we managed.

The horse races in Prineville are so much fun! Betting is only $2, and there are twelve races each night. Last year, I walked away with over $125. This year, I lost about $45. Oh well! It was fun, plus I needed a reason to buy a big bag of kettle corn.

My friend, Kathleen, and I went blueberry picking in Leaburg, about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Bend. The bushes were huge and plentiful. We wanted to get our money's worth, so we picked for four hours. Kathleen picked fifteen pounds, and I left with thirteen pounds. Blueberry baking galore! Looking forward to a blueberry pie this winter!
said I would never do a book signing. But then, I also said I wouldn't
marry someone who wore pleated pants and button-down short-sleeves...

Which is my way of saying I'm having a book signing. I can think of no
place better than the lovely Bluebird Coffee Company. They have amazing coffee and homemade almond milk. Plus a light, airy space with beautiful hues of blue painted everywhere. The owners are so nice!

The signing is on Friday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m and will include a short reading
(something else I wasn't going to do...) followed by socializing, book signing,
and Southern desserts.
Who knows what rules I will break next! I'm not into celebrating my birthday. Lots of reasons why. So, if you ask me why, I usually make up an answer that will satisfy you so we can move on.

By chance, I didn't have to work at Mt. Bachelor, so I slept in despite Yam walking all over my head and pillow. Emil took me to McKay Cottage for breakfast. My usual is the breakfast sammy without bacon and a hot chocolate.

It was fantastic! Emil had the classic eggs benedict. What a perfect way to start off the day. After breakfast, I worked on book marketing and other miscellaneous stuff. Then, I baked my favorite cupcakes of all time. Self-filled cupcakes. The recipe is from my grandma.

I didn't eat them all although I was tempted! The rest of the cupcakes traveled to work with me the next day, and I fed my co-workers.

A surprise doorbell in the afternoon revealed beautiful flowers from my friend, Katie, and her boyfriend, Erik. It was such a wonderful surprise! She always sends the best gifts.

The night before, we had friends over for dinner and cards. It was really nice, and we had plenty of leftovers. I made two calzones - eggplant and italian sausage/red pepper. So for my birthday dinner, we heated up leftovers and enjoyed a lovely evening together. Low key and just what I wanted!

My book is finally published and available for purchase. It's been a long, frustrating experience, but I learned lots of information on publishing and editing. Thanks to everyone for their patience! Here's a link to buy the book:
Everyone kept saying I needed a goal with this book. Financially or otherwise. My goal was to publish it. Of course, I'd like to make back the money I spent on it, but I'm just happy with the process completed.

Time to work on book number two. *grin*

After many years of having our bed on the floor, we are now grown ups with a hand-crafted platform bed. Emil worked hard for several days building it, but he spent many weeks sketching and designing it. He wanted the platform to raise up easily, so we can stow totes and such. It's a success!
Now, Emil is sorting through totes and deciding what to stash under there. I'm repacking totes and trying to assist, while still gimpy. Emil loves the bed. I'm still getting used to the height. I wonder what his next project will be!

For Emil's Christmas gift, I bought him tickets to see Martin Sexton, an amazing musician. He is on tour and came to Eugene on Wednesday. I saved my pennies, booked a room at our favorite B&B, and we left early on Wednesday morning after dropping the cat at the kennel.

Check out his music! My favorite song is "Glory Bound."

http://martinsexton.com/

Since my leg is still wrapped up and sore, Emil drove us. An easy drive (especially for me) over a wet mountain pass. On the way to Eugene, we saw elk right by the road, daffodils, snow on the sides of the pass, and pink blooms on trees. Spring has arrived to the valley.

Before we checked in to the B&B, we stopped in to the best bakery in the world! A Sweet Life. I gave up sweets for Lent, so I tried to avoid the dessert case.
We love The Oval Door B&B. It's owned by two friends, who are also trained chefs. Their breakfasts are fabulous! They served us crispy polenta topped with poached eggs, goat cheese, and corn/pepper relish.
After hitting our favorite stores (Cabela's for Emil), we hit the road. At least three inches of fresh snow on the pass, plus rain all the way from Eugene past the McKenzie River. Typical! Glad to return home and pick up Yammers!

In February, a group of us sang and played at the ukulele open mic. Emil was kind enough to record and edit it. I was recovering from a cold, so I didn't sing much. But, it sure was fun!

On Wednesday, we cross-country skied at Mt. Bachelor. It was a gorgeous day, and the snow was icy. We skied approimately six miles and even clocked 24 mph down the common corridor. One of my better days skiing, but I was tired by the time we returned to the lodge. I packed us food to make a lunch, but forgot to pack jelly. Typical.

Our real plan that day was to take an alpine lesson, but we couldn't get into a lesson. I receive complimentary lessons if there's one paid person in the lesson. Emil receives a discount on the lesson. Unfortunately, no one signed up for a lesson. Our back up was Nordic, so it turned out fine.

That evening, I hatched a plan. We would watch a few youtube videos on alpine skiing ... just for some helpful tips. I mean, we are already familiar with skiing, so how hard can it be? Plus, I watch skiers and boarders coming down the hill from my ticket window at least three days a week. I see what they do.

So, we would drive up, rent equipment, and ride the free beginners lift for a few hours. Easy. One quick stop for donuts in the morning, and we were on our way!

We rented equipment at Sunrise Lodge. Jeff, the manager, was super helpful with the fitting, how to carry our skis without whacking people in the head, and declared me the experienced skier since I took one lesson in the eighth grade. Now, find the chair lift, put on our skis, and get out there.

It was a perfect day. Snowing, four inches of fresh wet snow (slow snow), and not crowded. We clipped in, skied over to Carrousel lift, and loaded up.

First run: A few falls for me, one for Emil. We practiced linking turns, pizza, and french fries.
Second run: No falls for either of us. We laughed, cheered each other on, and managed not to fall off the lift, or drop off poles.
Third run: One fall for me. None for Emil. Still laughing. Enjoying the falling snow.
Fourth run: No falls for either of us.
Fifth run: I felt I was going a little too fast, tried to pizza, and fell. By the time I bit it, I was going slow, but my knee bent a really weird way, and I heard a pop. Huh. Oh well.

I tried to ski across, but was a little shaky. Then, I decided I would just take off my skis and walk down, then rest my knee. Emil pushed the quick release for my ski, and my knee popped to the left again, and I fell down. Time to call ski patrol.

Side note: Ski patrol are young, cute, bearded guys who show up within three minutes. How do I know this? I've had to call them several times for guests with injuries. I time them. Once, I saw them put a girl on a backboard, into a sled, right in front of my window. They were amazing - nice, considerate, and thorough. I also see hurt people coming down in a sled, and I vowed I would never ride in that sled.

My friend, Francis, had just skied over from Pine Marten to see how we were doing. He was going to teach us some of his bad habits. I told him we were doing great before he arrived, but would he mind skiing down and asking the lifty to call ski patrol for me.

BOOM! Two minutes later, Kyle, from ski patrol showed up. I told him I was an employee and not to tell anyone he was helping me. He immediately told dispatch via radio about "an employee, he was assessing." I told him I was not able to walk, and I was not going in a sled. Thankfully, he skied down for a snowmachine and brought it up to me.

Wow. We're back in rentals where it all started. Except, I have to fill out an incident report, and I can hardly walk. Yay. Time to hit up Bend Memorial Clinic Urgent Care. Kyle, the ski patrol, ruled out broken bones. He was so NICE! And, he said it was a steep part of the beginners area. When he taught ski school, he never took folks down that part of the hill. Interesting.

It was a long wait at Urgent Care. We never ate the lunch I packed us. To redeem myself from the forgotten jelly, I pre-packed our sammys. So, while we were in the waiting room, we pulled out our lunch. I'm sure people looked at us and wondered why we packed food to come see the doctor!

So, the doc thinks I have a sprained knee and fit me for an immobilizer. If my knee doesn't feel better in two weeks, I'll have an MRI done. Fun fun fun.

Skiing is awesome! It really was fun. We laughed on the slope, in the waiting room, and over breakfast this morning, as I hobbled around.

For now, I'm working on a cover story to tell my co-workers, so I don't have to admit it was a skiing accident. Any ideas?
We played cribbage the other night with a bunch of friends. It's one of my favorite card games, next to euchre. I learned to play cribbage at a very early age. My grandparents taught me to play, and I have many fond memories from playing over the years. A few years ago, I taught Emil to play and passed down the wisdom I learned from Grandpa. Never break up a run. You never know what the turn up card will be, and it could make a huge point difference in your hand.

Here are a few memories from playing:

1. During my teen years, I always wanted to watch TV while we played. My grandparents had cable, so I could soak up MTV when I visited them in Florida. I lost every game if the TV was on. A huge distraction, but I vividly remember watching the Paradise City video by Guns N' Roses.

2. If there wasn't a seat for me at the table, I played waitress and took drink orders. At their home in Cincinnati, I would carry around paper and pen. Of course, I was too little to fulfill the orders. Pretty sure that's where my waitressing career began.

3. In close point games, I remember Grandma and her partner would say funny things before cutting the turn up card - little chants and such. Sometimes, they would switch chairs, thinking it would change the outcome of the cards. Being a little kid and watching that seemed so fun. Sometimes it would work.

4. Snacks were a big thing. I remember eating Gardetto's Original Snack Mix out of small wooden bowls. Two bowls on the table in between folks.

Here's a pic:
So ... in about a month, my book will be for sale. You can buy it from
Amazon or from me (free shipping to the first 50 buyers). I hope you'll
support me. The book is a quirky romance set in Anchorage, starring my
friends!

It's been an interesting process thus far. Honestly, writing the book was the easiest part. I have a feeling the marketing of the book will be quite a hurdle, but I'm looking forward to it. I'd love to come to Anchorage for a book signing. We'll see how it goes.

A huge thanks to everyone who has helped me so far. I appreciate you answering emails so quickly, looking at grammar books, and helping me create the characters.

Here's a few factoids regarding the book:

- Most of the interactions between my work husband and me are true.
- I always wanted sisters. I love listening to sister stories from my friend, Lori. So, my character in the book has two sisters.
- My character has an entire closet dedicated just for shoes. I own less than five pairs of shoes now since my feet shrunk.
- Many of the characters are named after friends I've lost touch with over the years.

Okay, enough teasers. I'll let you know when it's available for purchase! Thanks for your support!
